Instead of beginning with Romeo and Juliet, ask, How does the play show the danger of impulsive decisions? A question creates pressure. The thesis becomes the best answer the writer can defend.

After that, add limits. Name the specific part of the topic, the cause or effect being studied, the group affected, or the evidence the paper will use. Then make sure the sentence can be supported in the available length. A five-page essay needs a thesis that can be proven in five pages, not a claim that would require a book.
