Those habits still matter, but digital testing has added a second layer of preparation: students now need to understand the testing format, the device, the app, and the difference between typing an answer and handwriting one in a booklet. The content of the exam is still the center of the work. The delivery system simply changes what can go wrong, what feels familiar, and what students should practice before exam day.
College Board’s current AP guidance makes that shift clear for the 2027 AP Exams. That does not mean every AP exam feels the same. That shift sounds small until the clock is running. Students should practice copying key values accurately, labeling work, leaving enough space, and writing answers that a scorer can follow. The digital part delivers the question; the handwritten part still carries the reasoning.
Device Readiness Is Now Part of Exam Readiness
Students do not need to become technology experts to take a digital AP exam, but they do need to treat the device as part of the exam plan. Bluebook runs on approved devices such as Windows or Mac computers, iPads, and school-managed Chromebooks. Some students will use school-managed devices, while others may be responsible for preparing a personal device. That distinction matters because students with school devices may not be able to install or update the app themselves.
The practical checklist is simple but easy to overlook. Students should confirm which device they will use, make sure Bluebook is installed, check that the device is updated, and verify that they can sign in with their College Board account. Saving a password in a browser or relying on a half-remembered login is a weak plan. Digital testing can make logistics feel more complicated, but the purpose of preparation is simple: protect attention for the exam itself. A student should not be solving login problems, wondering whether a charger is packed, or learning where the review button is while the clock is running. Those tasks belong before exam day. The exam room should be reserved for reading carefully, choosing answers, organizing evidence, and managing time.
That is especially true for hybrid exams, where attention moves between the screen and the booklet. Students should listen closely to the proctor’s instructions, use only the materials allowed, and keep handwritten work organized from the beginning. If an answer belongs in a booklet, it needs to be clear enough for scoring, not just understandable to the student who wrote it. Good organization is not decoration; it helps protect points when a response involves several steps.
Students should also know what to do if something goes wrong. The best AP preparation still begins with the course: knowing the concepts, practicing the kinds of questions the exam asks, and learning from teacher feedback. Digital testing does not replace that foundation. It adds a format students need to rehearse so the exam experience does not feel unfamiliar. A student who understands the course and the testing routine has more room to think.
